Phillip Thrives in His Work Environment

“My job is quite relaxing and it is enjoyable. I like the slower pace and the chance to do things properly.” —Phillip

Phillip, a 35-year-old Nexus Human Services client, who lives with autism spectrum disorder, shares an inspiring story of his work journey.

In 2017, he decided to trade the bustle of Western Sydney for a quieter life in Canberra, where he is surrounded by a family and services network. While searching for job opportunities, he found support through his Nexus coaches, who helped him with employment matters such as his job application for Bunnings and developed tools to support a healthy living.

Since then, Phillip has worked at Bunnings Warehouse, where he waters and cares for plants in the nursery. He fondly describes his job as ‘relaxing’ and takes pride in doing it well ensuring the plants have everything they need to thrive.

At Bunnings, Phillip says he feels supported in taking time to do things to a high standard. Finding this positive job fit has been a boon for both him and Bunnings, where his employers share that he is growing more confident and beginning to take on additional nursery support, stock, and customer service tasks.
